You can attach the vent clips directly to the clamp for vent mountiing or you can attach the clamp to the suction cup arm and mount it on the windshield or dash.The good:
The vent clips attach securely to the vent louvers on the dash and are very unlikely to damage them, but it's kind of hard to get them into place. The suction cup attaches securely to the windshield as well. In fact, I could pull hard it wouldn't come off without flipping the lever that releases the pressure. I didn't try the dash mount, because it has adhesive strips and I didn't want that glue on my dash.
When using the suction mount, the 2 adjustment knobs allow you to position the arm in almost any position you can imagine. With the vent clips you don't use that arm, but in both cases you can rotate the phone from landscape to portrait or anywhere in between and it stays where you left it.
The clamp portion is extremely well designed. It grips your phone between soft rubberized pads from all 4 sides, holding very securely without causing any scratches or pressure on the screen. You sit the phone in the clamp, squeeze the the long sides toghether and the short sides automatically close proportionally until you get a firm grasp. It also stays right where you left it.
The bad:
The vent clips are a REAL bad idea in winter. Some warm air comes from the vents even when you have your heater set to blow on the windshield or floor. This heat cannot be good for the iPhone. Alternatively, mounting it to the windshield on a long trip in summer exposes your iPhone to the sun (you can actually feel it get hot in both cases).
The way the clamp attaches the receiver on the suction cup arm is flawed. The reciever has those familiar grooves that have wide slots at the top and narrow slits at the bottom. The tabs on the clamp are wide at the tip like a nail head. You insert the head of the tabs into the wide slots and slide it down behind the narrower slits so it can only come off when pushed back up. It's really hard to get the tabs into the slots, because the tabs are very short. Still, it holds quite securely until you rotate the phone from portrait to landscape. At that point the tabs can slide sideways into the wide slots that are no longer at the top and the clamp falls off the mount into the floor and under your feet.
Additionally, even in the portrait position, the phone falls off the mount easy if try to scroll down using the iPhone's touch screen. Imagine pressing your finger against the screen and sliding upward to scroll through a playlist. The upward pressure pushes the tabs on the clamp up the slits in the mounting base into the wide slots where you would insert them and suddenly your phone and the clamp it's attached to are in the floor under your feet again. You can solve this easily with 4 drops of super glue, but then you can never switch from vent clip to suction mount again.
