(More customer reviews)I've purchased many Oregon Scientific thermometers and hygrometers over the years and the RMS600/A would appear to continue the general trend.I'll start with describing my feelings specific to the RMS600/A.
Highs:
- The thermometer and outdoor unit worked when powered up and appear accurate relative to my other equipment
- The instructions do a good enough job setting up the indoor and outdoor unit
- Fantastic backlight improves the readability in low light
Lows:
- The software is very poor with MANY complaints not just from myself (search around)
- The tech support is slow and not helpful, replied to me with inaccurate information
- From past history, Oregon Scientific devices only last a few years
The big selling feature for me was the fact you can plug it into your PC to track the temperature over time.I find this handy for a variety of uses, such as planning outdoor exercise. It logs humidity too, which can be useful if you make use of a humidifier when sleeping to see what levels it runs through the night. In theory, its a great idea.
In practice, the hardware is fine but the software is absolutely horrible.Among the problems I've already run in to:
- Software uses about 20% CPU time any time the display is up
- Software can take several minutes to let you specify a city
- Time displayed is off by an hour (Possibly a DST bug due to Arizona not using DST)
- Historic data randomly disappears from the log history (a big deal for a logging thermometer)
- Automated software update doesn't work correctly
- Reinstalling the product led to having it listed twice in the Control Panel "Add/Remove Programs" listing
- Reinstalling the C++ libraries can screw up the C++ security update from Microsoft
- Software randomly tries to reinstall itself
- Software sometimes refuses to run because it thinks it is out of date
- Sometimes displays no weather information at all and declares no home city was set
There's probably even more than that, but those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. It's truly the worst software I've paid money for in at least a decade.Thankfully, it does work most of the time, but what a pain. You need to be a very patient person or you're just going to end up very frustrated and wanting to return it for a refund.I've owned six other Oregon Scientific units in the last 10 years or so prior to this one.The trend is for them to be "good enough" for a few years, then they break. From what I've seen so far, I don't expect the RMS600 to be anything different.
